Models

In science, models are a representation of an object, a process of a system, or an idea that scientists use to present information to help better explain the phenomenon. There are 3 types of models: Physical models, mathematical/computer models and conceptual models. When it comes to models, there are advantages and limitations. 
Advantages
  • Saves money
  • A version that you can work with
  • Predictions can be made
  • Questions can be asked and answered
Limitations:
  • Details: The model cannot include every detail that is necessary.
  • Approximate/Accuracy: Models are not to the exact scale of the actual item which can affect predictions.​
Example: A Virus
  • The model of a virus to the right has advantages and limitations.
    •  The advantages are the following: (1) You can see what a virus looks like, (2) it is relatively inexpensive, and (3) you can see the virus in more detail to make predictions. 
    • The limitations are the following: (1) the model of the virus does not have every detail of an actual virus, (2) it is not the correct size, and (3) an actual virus could infect you, so you are unable to see how the virus will interact with a host. 
  • NOTE: These are just some of the advantages and disadvantages of this model.
